Is It OK To Drive On Empty?

We’ve all had those days. Traffic on the way to work was a nightmare, your day at the office was long and stressful, and the traffic on the way home was somehow worse. You look down and – wouldn’t you know it – your gas light is activated. The last thing you feel like doing is stopping to fill up, so you decide to drive the rest of the way home and deal with it in the morning. But is this OK? Is it good for your car? The answer is that, no, it probably isn’t a good move.

You Could Run Out Of Gas

Drive anything that runs on gas for long enough without a fill-up and eventually, it is going to stall out on you. Then what? You’ve either got a long walk to a service station, gas can in hand, or you’ve got a long wait in your car while a tow truck or AAA comes to you. That is embarrassing, time-consuming, and possibly expensive, so just avoid this by getting gas when you need it.

Your Fuel Pump Will Thank You

Your car’s fuel pump was designed to be submerged in gasoline, so when you drive on an empty tank, it can cause misfires and eventually malfunctions. An auto repair technician will tell you that a fuel pump is a difficult and expensive component to replace, so do yourself a favor and keep at least a quarter of a tank in your car at all times. Even if the gas light doesn’t active, try to keep it at the 1/4 level.

Make An Appointment

If you suspect you’ve damaged your fuel pump by chronic driving on empty, or you simply want us to take alook, make an appointment today! In the meantime, though, it doesn’t really matter how bad your day was; you should always make sure that there is gas in your vehicle.
